Medication

MEDICATION

For health and safety reasons, no medication will be given to learners by the school.

Educators should be informed personally and in writing by parents when learners are on medication which must be used during school hours.

The medication will be given to the child only if the teacher agrees to do so.

It is the parent’s responsibility to inform educators / the school of medical issues relating to their children.

SCHOOL POLICY ON INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES (BASED ON MEDICAL REGULATIONS)

Serious cases must be reported to the school immediately.   

A child who is obviously sick or not feeling well or has a bad cold / fever, must NOT BE SENT TO SCHOOL.

The child will be removed from class and the parents will have to come and fetch them.

Children with a high fever, vomiting, gastro (runny tummy) and bad coughs should be kept at home.

Children with infectious illnesses, scabies, ringworms, veld sores, etc. may only return to school with a doctor’s certificate. Cross infections at school must be avoided at all cost.

RULES REGARDING PERIODS OF INFECTION: (Please talk to your family doctor)

Chicken Pox     : From 2 days before rash until last scab has disappeared.

Conjunctivitis / Pink eyes – keep child at home until eyes are no longer red and painful

Diphtheria               : Until 6 daily throat swabs test negative.                

Hepatitis                  : Until complete recovery. Minimum exclusion – 7 days.

Yellow Jaundice     : Can be extremely contagious – please consult with doctor.

Lice                          : Until all the lice and nits are removed and hair is clean and lice free.

Measles                   : 7 days after first appearance of rash.

German measles    : For 5 days after rash appears.

Mumps                    : From the time that symptoms start and swelling has disappeared.

Ringworms             : Get appropriate treatment before sending child to school.

Scarlet fever /         : If child has no sore throat, no discharge from ears, nose, no recent enlarged glands or

Strep throat              discharging sores and on production of a medical certificate.

Minimum period of exclusion – 14 days after commencement of treatment.

Whooping cough   : Highly contagious. Can last up to 10 weeks. Child must stay at home until cleared by a doctor.

           

COVID 19

VERY IMPORTANT: If a child has been exposed to a person who is suspected or who have contracted Covid-19,

                                   the child must not be sent to school.

The parents must inform the school immediately if the child has been in contact or exposed to a possible Covid-19 case. The child must be kept at home for at least 7 days. A medical certificate indicating that the child or someone else tested positive for Covid-19 must be sent to school when the child returns. All Covid-19 related incidents must be discussed with the Principal.
