2024

welcome

I am Mr. A Naidoo

Principal

Kuswag Primary was established in 1966. It is a relatively “young” school compared to other schools in the area that are more than 100 years old. We currently have a diverse staff component of 47 comprising of 32 educators, 5 admin staff and 9 ground- and cleaning staff members. We have around 720 learners in total each year as a concerted effort is made to keep the numbers as low and manageable as possible for the teachers. There are 3 classes per grade from Grade R to grade 7. We also have one Grade 0 class for children 5 years old. Our ECD area is highly functional and well equipped for optimum Early Childhood learning.

Kuswag Primary is a good school. We achieve very good educational outcomes, despite the odds. The school has a well-functioning School Management Team that is always proactive and inclusive in its approach. We have an active, functional School Governing Body that supports the school in all spheres.

The teachers are all professionally qualified, hard-working and always willing to go the extra mile for the learners. They really care about the children in their care and try their best. We have a functional SBST and every effort is made to assist learners who experience barriers to learning. Children (and parents) who face various social challenges are counselled by a professional social worker. One of our teachers does remedial work with the Foundation Phase learners. Behavioural issues are addressed immediately in consultation with the parents.

The school day is started in prayer and our school song is proudly sung in English, Afrikaans an isiXhosa. We strive to deliver the best possible holistic education with an emphasis on maintaining high standards. Our learners achieve very good academic results and we have a full co- and extracurricular program. We offer sport such as rugby, soccer, cricket, netball, hockey, swimming, chess as well as choir. We have a dynamic Inter-Act club that undertakes various community-based social projects. To add a fun element to schooling, learners enjoy various social activities throughout the year.

Our medium of instruction (Home Language) is English. Afrikaans and IsiXhosa is offered at First Additional Language level. The school follows the official CAPS curriculum and ATP’s as regulated by the Department of Basic Education. We offer all the basic CAPS subjects and learners are assessed accordingly. All religions are welcomed at the school.

Our ground and cleaning staff work very hard to keep our school environment in a hygienically clean condition. We are blessed with excellent sporting facilities which are very well maintained.

The school is very safe with surveillance cameras all around the premises as well as 24 hour rapid emergency response. Daily access control is executed by a security officer. Every effort is made to continuously develop the school, but, just like all public schools in the district (if not country), we face the usual financial challenges. Regardless, our school fees are very affordable compared to other quintile 5 schools in East London. The school also offers after-care to learners whose parents are working late.

I am proud to say that Kuswag is a highly functional school that contributes towards the socio-economic development of our country.
